This serene original captures a single spiral seashell lying beneath clear, rippling water, painted by Robyn Clarke in acrylic on canvas. The shell rises to a fine point through a stack of stepped whorls, its pale cream and lilac surface streaked with bands of warm orange and gold.
The water is what brings this painting to life. A net of light dances across the sea floor in wavering lines of white, turquoise and gold, the way sunlight falls through a shallow pool, over a ground of deep blue, teal and green with patches of rust and orange beneath. White flecks scatter across the upper left, and the shell's soft shading, from bright cream on one side to cool grey-violet on the other, gives it a solid, rounded presence among all that movement.
Every spiral shell like this one was once home to a sea snail, which builds it gradually over its lifetime, each new whorl a little larger than the last as the animal grows. Once the snail is gone, the empty shell can last for years, tumbled by tides and settling in rock pools and shallows along the coast.
