"Summer Visitors" – Sacred Kingfishers Original Acrylic Painting

$800.00

This glowing original sets two sacred kingfishers shoulder to shoulder on a lichen-flecked branch, painted by Robyn Clarke in bold acrylic on canvas. Their turquoise crowns and wings, dark eye stripes and warm buff breasts stand out against a deep blue ground, with a curtain of hanging gum leaves falling in from the upper left.

The two birds face in opposite directions, one looking left and one looking right, which gives the composition a lovely balance and a touch of quiet humour. Soft blends of peach, cream and lilac build their rounded, fluffed-up bodies, while sharper strokes pick out the long bills, painted in cobalt and violet with a blush of pink at the base, and the bright flash of blue across the nearer bird's wing. A haze of pink and violet on the right edge lifts the cool palette and draws the eye across the canvas.

Sacred kingfishers are found across much of Australia, and in the south-east they are true summer visitors, arriving in spring to breed before heading north for the cooler months. Unlike their river-diving relatives, they forage largely on dry land, dropping from a watchful perch to snatch insects, small lizards and crustaceans, though birds along the coast and in mangroves will also take small fish from the shallows. They nest in tree hollows, riverbanks and even termite mounds.

This is a one-off original artwork. Once sold, it will not be available again.

The perfect addition to any nature lover's collection or an ideal centrepiece for those who appreciate original Australian wildlife art.
