This joyful original brings two sulphur-crested cockatoos in close, painted by Robyn Clarke in bold acrylic on canvas. Both birds face right in profile, one just behind the other, their yellow crests sweeping back across the top of the canvas in a bright golden arc.
What makes this painting is how much colour Robyn finds in a white bird. The faces and breasts are built from soft layers of lilac, rose, mauve and pale gold, so the plumage shimmers rather than reading as flat white, and the background moves through cobalt, violet and teal behind them. Against all that softness, the deep navy bills and dark eyes, each set in a pale lilac ring, give the piece its weight and focus.
Sulphur-crested cockatoos are found across eastern and northern Australia and into New Guinea, at home in woodland, farmland and suburban streets alike. They raise their crests when excited or alarmed, and when a flock feeds on the ground a few birds often keep watch from the trees, ready to sound the alarm. Clever and endlessly curious, they have even learned to lift the lids of wheelie bins in parts of Sydney, a trick that has spread from bird to bird across the suburbs.
