This luminous original sets two Australian magpies side by side on a sweeping branch beneath a curtain of hanging gum leaves, painted by Robyn Clarke in acrylic on canvas. Their crisp black-and-white plumage, pale bills and red-brown eyes stand out sharply against a soft sky of peach, lilac and pale gold.
Where Robyn's other acrylics crop in close, this one opens out into a full scene. The canopy frames the top of the canvas, a twisting limb curves in from the right, and deep greens and violets pool in the shadows below. Against that soft setting the birds read with real strength: one stands square on the branch, the other is turned so its long wings and tail fall past the perch, and touches of blue and lilac catch the light across their white feathers.
Australian magpies are found across most of the continent, at home in open woodland, farmland and suburban parks wherever trees meet open ground. Despite the name, they are not related to the magpies of Europe; their closest relatives are the butcherbirds and currawongs. They live in close family groups that hold the same territory year after year, and their rich, warbling carols are often sung together as a group.
