This vivid original brings two rainbow lorikeets in close against a dark, smoky ground, painted by Robyn Clarke in bold acrylic on canvas. Their cobalt heads, coral-orange bills and fiery red-orange breasts glow out of the shadow, with a flash of lime green at each nape and bright orange-red eyes catching the light.
The dark background is what makes this painting sing. Set against charcoal and blue-grey, every colour in the plumage seems to burn brighter, and the short, layered strokes give the feathers a soft, almost velvety depth. The upper bird turns three-quarters towards the viewer while the lower one sits just in front in profile, facing left, close but with a little space between them, so the two blue heads stack down the canvas in a strong diagonal.
Rainbow lorikeets are among the most familiar birds of eastern Australia, ranging along the east coast from Cape York to South Australia, with introduced populations now established around Perth and in Tasmania. Males and females look almost identical, and pairs often stay close together year-round. At dusk they gather in noisy communal roosts that can number in the hundreds, before scattering again at first light to feed on blossom, nectar and fruit.
