This bold original turns three large gumnuts into glowing forms against a deep violet ground, painted by Robyn Clarke in acrylic on canvas. They hang from curving stalks like lanterns, their woody shells lit in copper, burnt orange and amber, with cool turquoise and sea-green catching the light across their shoulders.
The shells are built from short, broken strokes of colour with darker tones showing between them, echoing the rough, weathered grain of real gumnuts. Two of the capsules face outward, their open mouths dark and hollow, while the third turns side-on behind them. The surrounding violet, navy and plum, streaked with fine lighter veining, sets off their warmth and makes the whole group seem to glow.
Gumnuts are the hard, woody fruits of Australia's eucalypts, each one built to protect the tiny seeds inside until they are ready to fall. In many species the seed can stay sealed on the tree for a long time, only released once the capsule dries out or is warmed by fire, and the empty, open cups left behind are a familiar sight scattered beneath gum trees right across the country.
This is a one-off original artwork. Once sold, it will not be available again.
