This striking original captures a luna moth resting on an old, moss-covered wall, painted by Robyn Clarke in acrylic on canvas. Its pale mint-green wings, edged in a fine line of purple, spread wide across the rust and terracotta stones, each wing marked with a small eyespot and a long, graceful tail trailing down to the lower right.
The contrast is what gives this painting its glow. The cool, soft green of the moth sits against warm, weathered stone in orange, rust and red, with cushions of bright moss along the ledges and dark cracks running between the blocks. A strip of clear blue sky at the very top opens the composition, while the moth's fine, pale antennae and soft, furry body draw the eye to the centre of the canvas.
Luna moths are native to eastern North America, where they are among the largest and most recognisable moths. Adults live for only about a week and cannot feed at all, spending their short lives searching for a mate. Their long, twisting tails are more than decoration: in flight they spin and flutter, helping to throw off hunting bats.
